Trinity Industries’ modified ET-Plus Guardrail has been the subject of allegations by crash victims who were injured when the guardrails locked up and speared through vehicles. Trinity had narrowed the channel through which the guardrail extrudes, causing it to jam inside the channel, to impale oncoming vehicles and, in some cases, to kill motorists.

A current lawsuit by a former Trinity employee claims the guardrail design was changed to save money. Trinity has admitted to “inadvertently omitting” documents that would have notified the federal government of the money-saving design as early as 2005. To date, more than 30 states have banned new installations of Trinity highway guardrail systems.
